I first learned of the mansion and its eccentric designer from a collection of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Cartoons in my grade-school library. I never imagined that I would work there as a tour guide. These are the pictures I took there, and the stories that I told.

Stephen, does your research indicate if this particular crescent shape had some astrological or cabalistic significance to Mrs. Winchester? Or was is simply a geometric figure, common to other ornate features in homes in that style?
I see many arcs and curlicues throughout Queen Anne, Victorian and Edwardian features, but not many solid crescents with "pie wedges" cut out.
Another look at the photograph, and I now see that is definitely is a "moon" crescent, not a pie wedge.
As part of the tour, we always mentioned that it could have some 'spiritual significance.' Although the crescent shape does have some spiritual symbolism behind it, I think the most likely explanation is that it's ornamental.
