I first learned of the mansion and its eccentric designer from a collection of Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Cartoons in my grade-school library. I never imagined that I would work there as a tour guide. These are the pictures I took there, and the stories that I told.

Thanks for posting these pictures. My sister and I share a fascination with the mansion; she has visited and I have not. Finding your blog allowed me to send her a birthday present I knew she'd enjoy.
Love the snaps, thanx!
Is the large dark area partially covered with vines (in the modern picture) where the gigantic multiple-flue pierced chimney (in the old photo) was removed? Does anybody know if the alteration was done by Mrs. Winchester, or why?
i think the chimney was victim of the 1906 earthquake.
is the roof really purple now, or is it just a trick of the light?
Question about the missing chimney answered in this prior post. Sorry about the noise.
Hey guys, no the roof isn't purple now. The photo was somewhat overexposed, and it appears much worse in JPEG form.
Leslie, you're right. The chimney collapsed during the earthquake, and Mrs. Winchester never repaired it. I have a copy of a photo taken right after the quake, and it shows the half-collapsed chimney. I'll post it later this week.
